Level 1: CMA Foundation

Passing Criteria
Foundation is the only level where a 12th-pass (or appearing) student can register directly — it exists specifically as the school-to-professional bridge for commerce, science, and arts students alike.
Level 2: CMA Intermediate
CMA Intermediate has two entry paths, and this is where a lot of confusion happens for +1/+2 students planning ahead:
Route A: Through CMA Foundation
Students who’ve cleared CMA Foundation can register for CMA Intermediate directly — no graduation degree required. This is the natural path for students who started CMA Foundation in Class 11/12 and want to continue immediately.
Route B: Direct Entry (Graduates Only)
Direct entry into CMA Intermediate — skipping Foundation entirely — is available only to:
- Candidates who have completed graduation or post-graduation (in any stream except Fine Arts) from a recognised university, or
- Candidates who have cleared the CA Intermediate or CS Intermediate/Executive exams
Level 3: CMA Final
- Eligibility: Must have cleared both groups of CMA Intermediate.
- Structure: 8 papers across two groups, with one elective paper in Group IV — candidates choose from options such as Strategic Performance Management & Business Valuation, Risk Management in Banking & Insurance, or Entrepreneurship & Startup, letting you specialise slightly based on career direction.
- Passing criteria: Same 40% per paper + 50% aggregate per group logic as Intermediate, with the same exemption benefit for high-scoring individual papers.
Practical Training: The Step Students Often Forget
Alongside the exam levels, ICMAI requires roughly 15 months of practical training, which can be completed alongside later stages of the course (often overlapping with Intermediate or Final preparation) rather than strictly after clearing all exams. This training component is one of the reasons CMA’s total realistic timeline runs close to CA’s despite having fewer total papers — plan for it early rather than treating it as an afterthought once your exams are done.
